The San Fransisco Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) has introduced a new regional class this year for those who want to go road racing with a little more than what the showroom stock class has to offer but not as wild or expensive as a GT class. The Spec Mustang (SMG) class is for the S197 Ford Mustang/Shelby GT built from 2005 – 2009 . The goal of this class is to provide a fast and safe race car that is affordable to build when compared to other race cars in its category of performance. This is not a class for those who want to continually improve, modify, or develop their cars. The focus of the Spec Mustang class is for the owner/drivers to be able to build the car, and run it regularly, with normal maintenance and wear item repair, but to not continue to escalate the performance of the car. Rather, the focus will be on learning the suspension setup on the car and developing driving and racecraft skills.
The Spec Mustang borrows on the success and concept of the Spec Miata (SMT). When compared to the SMT, the overall rules are similar with two major differences. The Spec Mustang includes a spec, fully adjustable racing suspension, and bans the building, balancing and blueprinting of engines.
